We need to eat to survive, therefore is it considered a sin if we steal food so we can survive?
Well, stealing is stealing regardless of the situation and reason. 
There are several ways we can be able to feed ourselves, not just stealing.
Remember the commandments: Thou shall not steal. There are other means where you can get food though.
There no grey area in God.
Either black or white.
Life or death.
Good or evil.
Hot or cold.
Truth or lies.
So stealing is stealing. And sin is sin.
Stealing is a sin. For the commandment says Thou shall not steal.
