When you feel very tired, empty, hopeless, darkness… full of your mind, what are reasons to live?
I asked a friend of mine this very question once. (I’ve asked it a lot of times while I was walking in sin). Her reply really made me think. She asked me who I loved most in my immediate family. I told her “my big brother”. She said, “Okay. Let’s say your big brother commits suicide.” After I got done gasping and staring at her, she said “What would that do to you?”
I thought about it for a bit, and said “I’d be furious with him! How dare he do this to say life isn’t worth it! What a terrible message!” Then I got it. Life is not just for ME.
This life, as a Christian, is for God. A person much more important than my big brother! So that’s starting at the far end of hopelessness.
The last thing on that same idea is this: there are people who will help if you become (or anyone becomes) suicidal. I used them frequently during my darkest years and they helped. These are not Christians as a group, just worldly folk. Even they care enough to put much effort into saving people’s lives. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline

Now, to get to the lesser (not as extreme) parts of hopelessness: frankly, other than the obvious beauty of nature, goodness of friendship, and love of family, there is not much. Sure, one can get a certain type of satisfaction out of the rewards of this world. But as anyone who is struggling with this knows: none of that matters.
I would highly recommend skipping the worldly help and going straight to the Bible. Not a church. The Bible. Read it. Find out how incredibly important you are in God’s creation! Find out we are not just amoebas who have “evolved” into random things that are INCREDIBLE called thinking human beings! You are made in God’s image. To stamp that out or say it is no good is wrong. However, to be hopeless is far from a lost cause. My hopelessness in my own strength is actually what tilled the soil of my heart for salvation! It was only when I gave up thinking I could “do it all by myself” that I became open to giving God my whole life and entire being. And wow, that made the biggest difference of everything else in my life combined!
Will pray for you. Great question as you are SO not alone in this place.
Whenever I feel these emotions, I try to remind what God gave me already. For instance, I can open my eyes every morning, breathe by myself , see beautiful sky and walk with my strong legs…
The last year in high school, I fell into light depression. It is the year right before I became a Christian.
I started to ask my self: who am I and what is the purpose of my life? No answer and don’t know where I could find the answer. And the first time I started to have the thought: I don’t want to live.
Looking back, it sounds like a sad story. We are living in a world that many people lost the meaning of their life. It’s so sad. When you feel no reason to live, there are two reasons to live. One is that someone loves you. The other one is that you can love someone that needs love.
God called me at the darkest moment through His servants. After becoming a Christian, life is filled with hope even in difficulties. What are reasons to live? So many. Love and Beauty. To have a family based on Faith. To preach gospel to the ends of the earth. To fulfill His’s will on earth and build His kingdom. To raise many many kids and help them to like Faith ancestors etc…
Thank you for your precious response, touched by the reasons, “To fulfill His’s will on earth and build His kingdom. To raise many many kids and help them to like Faith ancestors…”
Thank you for your sincere response. Life is not easy, even I can read the Bible, I can listen to the sermon, I can pray. When some negative thoughts come, feel the struggle in heart really. Even I know some voices are from Satan, but still hard by my self to go through this kind of harsh time.
I know God is the final reason why to live for me. I am his child, He created me in his love, I am blessed, all things and all people surround me are from God, through them God has a good purpose for me. But it’s still hard for me to go through a difficult time. In this kind of period, I really know I need help, I need prayer for me to battle in the spirit world.
If someone has the same experience as me, don’t be shy to ask prayer support from Christian friends and find help.
I have good news on that one!
James 4:7 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
7 Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
That battle is ultimately Christ’s, not ours. We, as saved Christians cannot be overtaken by evil.
And
Romans 8:37-39
37 But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
In fact, the whole chapter of Romans 8 is about Deliverance from Bondage and Our Victory in Christ.
Will most DEFINITELY pray for you, sister @Phoebe
To glorify God. I think this is the only reason.
Whenever I feel very tired, I usually go back to my mother’s side and do nothing but accompany her.Through living with her for a short time, I can feel that there are many people I love and who love me in this world. It is this love that makes me have the courage and motivation to live seriously.I suppose that the consolation we receive from humen has this healing power, not to mention the love from the Lord.Love is what keeps me alive.
The reason to live is to receive love from God, and share the love with others.
One way or another, many of us dedicate our lives to something other than our own self-interest.
It might be a spouse, a child, a career or anything else; whatever it might be, it’s the thing that makes you get up in the morning, fight off the sleep and start a new day.
It’s your reason to live, the fire in your soul, and without it, you have no idea what to do with yourself.
My reason for living is to hear God’s word and to share it with people. Spread love and kindness to others.
There is so many reasons to live but the greatest reason why we live is to served God and give our life to Him. Because our life is not ours its belong to God so we give back our life to God to be a servant of Him.
@Phoebe Being alive every day, knowing that you are breathing, heart is pumping , your organs are accordingly in place, I consider it a GREAT BLESSING. That is one of the reasons why I am still alive.
So, in return, I will be a blessing to others and become also their reason to live.
Hello, dear @Phoebe
I liked your post, it’s cute and inspiring all the reasons the rest of users say. I believe that when feeling down I always think about my family, how much I love them and they love me! So through that I find the strength to keep going. If you think about it, you or your life, it’s not just about you! You have relationships, you have bonds, duties, responsibilities, dreams and desires! Those see all good reasons. And also, God itself, our father wants us to keep going, to live a fully life following his holy path.
Kind regards, Luis Guerrero.
Hi @Phoebe! I can feel you. Life can be pretty hard at times that you just can’t look at the brighter side even if you want to, you fight it and do efforts to feed yourself with positivity and with God but still fail to get back up. I’ve been there. It will take time, hang in there. God knows what you are going through and is preparing for your breakthrough. I am praying for you.
Hi @Phoebe thank you for this question.
God gave us a life to live because it is a way to spread His love and goodness. This life we are living is dedicated to the Lord. We should act like Christ, serve like Christ, and love like Christ. We know that many people become lost in many things but this is where neighbors come in. Our good neighbors help us through the obstacles that we encounter that is why we should also be compassionate. We live life not just for ourselves but also for others.
Hello @patri12 God created us to glorify Him. Unfortunately, not everyone does. Living apart from Him, they may find temporal fulfillment, but in the end, such a life will not matter. Only by recognizing and yielding our lives to God, thus bringing Him glory, do we find life’s meaning.
The reason we glorify God is that He alone is deserving of all glory and honor. Other so-called gods are not; we are not. The God who formed us also loved us enough to send His Son to die for us. Jesus deserves all the honor and glory.
My reason for living is to lead blinds or help for handicapped persons apart from giving healing words by Jesus power of course for His Glory!
